Minecraft mod loaders
Fabric vs Forge for a Minecraft server
Do not choose a loader by reputation alone. Choose the mods or modpack first, then use the loader and exact Minecraft version those files support.
Fabric and Forge both load Java Edition mods, but a mod built for one loader normally cannot be dropped into the other. The available version of the mod or pack you actually want is more important than a generic claim that one loader is faster or better.
The short answer
| Your starting point | What to choose |
|---|---|
| You already chose a modpack | The loader and Minecraft version listed by its publisher |
| A must-have mod only publishes Fabric files | Fabric |
| A must-have mod only publishes Forge files | Forge |
| You do not need gameplay-changing mods | Consider Paper or Purpur plugins instead |
| You are still unsure | Make a short mod list before checkout |
Choose Fabric when your mod list supports Fabric
Fabric Loader is a lightweight loader. Fabric API is a separate collection of game-specific hooks used by many Fabric mods, so a Fabric server often needs both the loader and a compatible Fabric API release.
Fabric is a sensible starting point for a small custom mod list when every required mod publishes a Fabric build for the same Minecraft version. It is not automatically compatible with Forge mods, and installing Fabric API does not make an incompatible mod work.
Choose Forge when the pack or mods require Forge
Forge has an established catalog across many Minecraft generations. It is often the required loader for an existing Forge modpack or an older collection built around a specific Forge release.
Match all three pieces: Minecraft version, Forge version, and each mod's supported version. Forge publishes latest and, where available, recommended installer builds for specific Minecraft releases. Newest is not automatically correct for an older pack.
Do players need to install the mods too?
It depends on each mod. Server-only mods can work without changing player clients. Mods that add blocks, items, entities, interfaces, or other shared content commonly require players to install a matching client setup. A modpack launcher can make that easier, but the server and players still need compatible files.
Read the publisher's installation and dependency notes for every mod. A server starting successfully does not prove that every player can connect with a different loader or version.
Check compatibility before starting the server
- Write down the exact Minecraft version.
- Confirm every mod is made for Fabric or every mod is made for Forge.
- Install required dependencies, including Fabric API when a Fabric mod requires it.
- Separate server-only mods from mods every player must install.
- Back up an existing world before adding, removing, or switching loaders.
- Test the complete combination before inviting the full group.
Removing content mods or changing loaders can damage or remove modded world data. Keep an independent backup that predates the change.
How automatic setup works at Exaltry
The configurator installs Fabric or Forge automatically after payment. Fabric setup includes Fabric API. Forge is offered only when an official installer is available for the selected Minecraft version. You receive panel access to upload compatible mods or a prepared pack without waiting for manual loader installation.
Automatic loader installation does not guarantee that arbitrary third-party mods are compatible, safe, or able to run within the selected plan. If a pack lists its own server requirements, follow those requirements when choosing RAM.
