Minecraft server planning

How much RAM does a Minecraft server need?

Player count matters, but it is only one part of choosing memory. Software, plugins, mods, exploration, entities, and view distance can change the answer substantially.

There is no reliable player-count-only formula for Minecraft server memory. Two servers with ten players can need very different resources when one is a mostly Vanilla survival world and the other uses a large modpack, many plugins, high view distance, or heavy world generation.

Use player count as a starting point, then account for what the server will actually run.

A practical starting point

Server profileStarting RAMExaltry plan
Small Vanilla or Paper server for a few friends4 GBStone
Growing Paper server or several plugins8 GBIron
Heavier plugins, a larger community, or some modded workloads12 GBDiamond

These are starting points, not performance guarantees. Minecraft performance also depends heavily on CPU speed, software version, plugin or mod behavior, world generation, entities, farms, view distance, and how players spread across the world.

What increases memory use?

More players

Each active player adds chunks, entities, inventory data, and plugin activity. Players exploring in different directions usually create more work than the same number of players staying together.

Mods and modpacks

Modded servers vary substantially. A lightweight quality-of-life collection may fit comfortably where a large content or automation pack does not. Check the modpack publisher's server requirements and leave room for startup and world generation.

Plugins

Paper plugins can add claims, permissions, maps, voice chat, economies, and logging. A few carefully selected plugins are different from a large network-style stack.

View and simulation distance

Higher distances keep more chunks loaded or active around every player. Lowering these values can reduce server load without changing the world or player data.

World generation

Exploring new terrain is more demanding than moving through already-generated chunks. Pre-generating a world can make resource use more predictable, but it also requires temporary processing time and storage.

Vanilla, Paper, or modded?

The official Java Edition server is the simplest choice when you want the standard game. Minecraft's official setup instructions require Java and describe running the server JAR from the command line.

Paper is designed for plugin-based servers and provides its own server JAR and version-specific Java requirements. Paper's current documentation maps Minecraft versions 1.20 through 1.21.11 to Java 21 and documents newer requirements separately.

Modded loaders such as Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge should be sized according to the actual modpack. A generic RAM table cannot guarantee that an arbitrary pack will run correctly.

Start sensibly, then measure

Choose enough memory for the expected workload, launch the real server configuration, and watch:

  • Memory use during startup and normal play.
  • Tick performance while players explore.
  • Console warnings, long garbage-collection pauses, or crashes.
  • Performance during backups and scheduled restarts.

Adding RAM cannot repair every performance problem. A broken plugin, runaway farm, overloaded CPU thread, or excessive world generation can remain slow even with unused memory.

Mapping that to Exaltry

Stone includes 4 GB and is the first option to test for a small Vanilla or Paper group. Iron includes 8 GB and provides more room for a growing private community or plugin setup. Diamond includes 12 GB for heavier workloads that still fit Exaltry's beta capacity and support boundaries.

Before checkout, customers choose server software, Minecraft version, plugin presets, gameplay settings, and a backup schedule. Unusual modpacks and migrations require review before launch.
