Paper vs Purpur: which should your server use?

What Paper gives you

Paper is a plugin-capable Minecraft server platform with extensive server configuration and its own plugin API. It is a strong default when you want a well-known Paper environment without adding another layer of gameplay-specific settings.

What Purpur adds

Purpur describes itself as a drop-in replacement for Paper focused on configurability and additional gameplay features. It inherits upstream Paper features and exposes many optional settings in purpur.yml.

Purpur's documentation says its added behavior defaults are chosen so an untouched Purpur configuration behaves like Paper. Choose Purpur for extra controls you intend to use, not because you need to enable everything.

Tradeoff: more knobs can be useful, but they also create more configuration to understand and retest during upgrades.

Will Paper plugins work on Purpur?

Purpur inherits Paper's APIs, and Purpur states that CraftBukkit, Spigot, and Paper plugins generally work on Purpur. Exceptions can exist when a plugin hard-codes server implementations, depends on internals, or has version-specific behavior.

For either platform, install plugins only from sources you trust. Paper warns that plugins have unrestricted access to the server and machine, so plugin selection is also a security decision.

Which should you choose?

• Choose Paper when you want a straightforward plugin server and do not need Purpur-specific gameplay controls.
• Choose Purpur when you have identified specific Purpur settings or gameplay changes you want.
• Stay with your current platform when a working server depends on plugins or behavior you have not tested on the alternative.

Before switching an established server, take a backup, verify critical plugins against the target Minecraft version, and test the change. Paper's update guidance recommends backups and checking startup logs for plugin conflicts.
